Vulcanization is the chemical process discovered by Charles Goodyear in 1839 that transforms sticky, temperature-sensitive natural rubber into a stable, elastic material suitable for countless applications. During vulcanization, sulfur atoms create cross-links between polymer chains, dramatically improving mechanical properties including tensile strength, elasticity, and resistance to heat and chemicals.
