What is Durometer?
Understanding Durometer Testing
A durometer measures the hardness of rubber and elastomeric materials using standardized methods (ASTM D2240). Different scales exist: Shore A for softer elastomers (0-100 range), Shore D for harder plastics, and Shore 00 for very soft materials. Common values include rubber bands at 25 Shore A, tire treads at 60-70 Shore A, and O-rings at 70-90 Shore A.
Usage Example
Quality control technicians use a Shore A durometer to verify that O-rings meet the specified hardness requirement before shipment.
